Helen met Morris (Marty) Fried in "the Movement" as they used to call it, in New York City in the late 1940's. They were Trotskyists and were vehement anti-Communists.. After their years as Trotskyists, they would have likely described themselves as Social Democrats. They were very disenchanted by the the antics of the New Left and dissociated themselves from all claiming to be socialists. They were trade unionists. Although they hated the label, they became Neoconservatives later in life.
