She was educated at Westminster School in London.
She was elected as Member of Parliament for Faversham and Mid Kent in the 2015 general election with 24,895 votes (54%) and a majority of 16,652. In July 2015, she was elected to sit on the Commons Health Select Committee. She is also Vice-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Mental Health and Company-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Healthcare.
Whately contested as a Conservative parliamentary candidate in 2010 in the Kingston and Surbiton constituency, however she lost to the Liberal Democrats candidate, Editor Davey by 13.3%.
