Clear brush and paths . Lay hardwood floor . Install wiring . Make a living . Take a vacation......These are some of the items that Adrian Hoover jotted down on his to-do list , soon after he and his wife , Helen , gave up urban comfort for the deeper delights of the wilderness in 1954. THE YEARS ON THE FOREST by Helen Hoover elaborates on that deceptively short list and describes the difficulties inherent in accomplishing each of those tasks . In fact , it would take sixteen years to check off every item on the list . This is the story of the Hoover's education in wilderness housekeeping and of the surprising challenges they faced at each step...

( Beloved nature writer Helen Hoover tells a delightful c...)
Beloved nature writer Helen Hoover tells a delightful children’s fable that will stir a sense of wonder and discovery in anyone who has ever felt the magic of the forest and imagined it a lively village of talking animals. Many years ago Great Wolf, a mighty hunter feared by all the animals in the forest, looked down on a deer, squirrel, and chickadee waiting for the Good Woodsman to provide a feast of cedar, corn, and seeds. The animals discover the Good Woodsman injured inside his house and with no fire in his stove. Worrying that he will freeze, the animals are disheartened that they have no way to help him. Great Wolf knew only he could rescue the Good Woodsman. When Great Wolf’s plan succeeds, the animals and the Good Woodsman invite the once-ostracized wolf to share Christmas dinner, and they realize that everyone has good things to offer if given the opportunity. Great Wolf and the Good Woodsman, charmingly illustrated with hand-colored woodcuts by renowned artist Betsy Bowen, is a classic tale to be passed down and enjoyed by many generations. Helen Hoover (1910–1984) moved to the wilderness of northern Minnesota in the 1950s. She and her husband Adrian chronicled their observations and experiences of life near their home on Gunflint Lake in a number of well-loved books, including Gift of the Deer, The Years of the Forest, and A Place in the Woods, all published by the University of Minnesota Press. Betsy Bowen operates a fine art print shop and studio at the edge of the wilderness near Lake Superior’s north shore. She is author and illustrator of Antler, Bear, Canoe: A Northwoods Alphabet Year, Tracks in the Wild, Gathering: A Northwoods Counting Book, and illustrator of A Wild Neighborhood (Minnesota, 1997) and Borealis (Minnesota, 2002).

(From dust jacket notes: "In the farthest wilds of northea...)
From dust jacket notes: "In the farthest wilds of northeastern Minnesota, back in the Gunflint Range, the author of this book and her artist-husband have a two-room cabin home in the bush country. Beginning one Christmas Day when they first watched the starving deer they later named Peter, the Hoovers had many opportunities, a passionate inclination, and the nature skills to observe this whitetail buck - joined later by his mate, and finally by several of their offspring - through the changing seasons of four years. Close as their relationship was to the generations of beautiful animals, the Hoovers did not consider them pets but fellow inhabitants of that wild country. Their observations reveal the rewards of living close to wild creatures; but more than that, they add valuable information to our knowledge of the cycle of life of the deer and other creatures native to the same world. For although the deer are the chief characters of this book, they are by no means the only wild creatures Mrs. Hoover writes of. Her naturalist's eye is just as sharp and her affection just as great for the antics of a curious chickadee or a flying squirrel. Mrs. Hoover's identification with nature knows no favoritism....Adrian Hoover's drawings are from life, and they add another level of understanding to his wife's vivid prose."
