Major, 1899; lieutenant-colonel, 1900. Colonel, 1901; commanded Northern Column, Bechuanaland Campaign, 1897 (despatches, medal with clasp). Served South African War, 1889-1902 (medal, four clasps, despatches, Companion of the Bath).
Commanded Colonial Division, September to October 1900. During 1901 commanded three mobile columns in Cape Colony under Colonel Douglas Haig (specially thanked). Commanded No. 1 Area fnorth - eastern) Colonial Defence Force, 1901 (specially thanked by Lord Kitchener and General French).
Decorated: In recognition of services during the operations under F.-M. Lord Roberts in South Africa. Commanding Kaffrarian Rifles; Chief Inspecting Olftcer Cape Colonial Forces since 1901; partner in Howard, Farrar, Robinson, and Company, Ltd., Engineers, Cape Colony.
