Helmut Federle was born on October 31, 1944 in Solothurn, Switzerland.

In 1964 Federle studied at the School of Applied Art in Basel. During the period from 1964 to 1969 Helmut attended General Trade School.
In 1969 and 1971, he received a federal scholarship.
In the early 1970s, Helmut travelled to Tunisia and the United States, where he examined the works of Mark Rothko and Agnes Martin.
In 1976 he exhibited in the Kunstmuseum der Stadt Solothurn. Three years later, in 1979, his works were shown at the Kunsthalle Basel.
During a short period from 1983 to 1984 Federle lived in Zurich and held a professorship in Reykjavik. Some time later, he moved to Vienna, where he started to work at Galerie Nächst St. Stephan.
In 1997, Helmut represented Switzerland at the XLVII Venice Biennale.
Federle was appointed a professor at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in 1999, a position he held until 2007.
