Worked at Bank of Amsterdam, Netherlands. Joined staff of Vervuurts (now Hakrin) Bank, Surinam. Chairman Nationale Partij Surinam 1970-1980.

Minister of Finance in pre-independence government 1973-1977. Prime Minister and Minister of General Affairs and Foreign Affairs 1973-1980 (deposed in coup). President and Prime Minister January since 1988.

Arrested August 1980, released 1981. Manager Director Surinaamse Volkscredietbank since 1982.
