(The Book of the Laws of Countries (BLC) by Bardaisan of E...)
The Book of the Laws of Countries (BLC) by Bardaisan of Edessa belongs to the most important writings of early Syriac literature. Bardaisan (154-222), a courtier at the court of King Abgar VIII of Edessa, was one of the most influential thinkers of his time. The BLC reflects the various cultures and the intellectual climate of northern Mesopotamia, and in particular that of the city of Edessa, at the end of the second century and the first decades of the third century CE. The BLC is the primary text for our knowledge of Bardaisan's ideas, as no writings of his have been preserved. The text can be divided into two parts. In the first part Bardaisan sets out his ideas about nature, fate and free will. In particular the liberty of man to act as he desires and the responsibility he has for his actions is emphasized by Bardaisan. This book includes the Syriac text of the BLC and the English translation by Han J.W. Drijvers.

(The studies in this volume are drawn together from a wide...)
The studies in this volume are drawn together from a widely scattered set of publications, many difficult of access. They exemplify the variety of influences - religious, cultural, political - that interacted in Syria in Late Antiquity, and the range of responses that these evoked in changing historical circumstances. The first section of the book is concerned with the development of Syriac Christianity, with particular articles looking at the relations between Christians and Jews, and at the position of holy men. There follow two sections focusing on Marcionism and on Manichaeism, while the final studies examine aspects of Syriac Christianity after the Arab conquests.

(This book makes available for the first time the Syriac t...)
This book makes available for the first time the Syriac text of the Judas Kyriakos legend in the manuscript Petersburg/leningrad N.S. 4 and an English translation of this text. The manuscript, which dates from c. 500 C.E., contains the oldest extant Syriac text of the legend of the discovery of the True Cross by Judas Kyriakos and is therefore of great value for the history of the legend of the inventio crucis. The book also makes available again the Syriac text of the manuscript Londin. Bl Add. 14.644 which was first published by E. Nestle in the last century but is now hard to obtain. Also of this text an English translation is offered. The Syriac text and translations which are accompanied by a commentary, are preceded by a long historical introduction on the various 4th/5th-century versions of the legend of the discovery of the Cross (Helena- and Protonike legend), the history of modern research on the inventio crucis legend, on the Syriac manuscript tradition of the legend, on the date and place of origin, as well as on the original language of the Judas Kyriakos legend.

(This study is divided into two parts: the first part aims...)
This study is divided into two parts: the first part aims to ascertain the facts of Helena's life on the basis of reliable historical sources; the second part deals with the legends concerning the discovery of the True Cross in Jerusalem by Helena. Fact and fiction, which are often confused in secondary literature, are carefully distinguished. The first part of the book deals with subjects such as Helena's life before the reign of Constantine, her residences in Trier and Rome, her conversion, her position at the court of Constantine and her pilgrimage to the Holy Land. The second part investigates the origin, development and function of the legends of the discovery of the True Cross, which were developed in the 4th and 5th centuries: the Helena legend; the (Syriac) Protonike legend; and the Judas Cyriacus legend. An appendix deals with the portraits of Helena.
