In 1958 he became a tax official In 1967 he went into politics as an Member of Parliament. He was State Secretary for the Interior in the First Van Agt cabinet and State Secretary for Finance in the Second Lubbers cabinet. From 1991 to 1999, he was president of the Netherlands Court of Audit.
He also had many other positions.
