Excerpt: ... chapter xxii. off fort pillow. Ravages of the Musquitos.--Their Secession Proclivities.--Battles between the Insects and Correspondents.--Anecdote of General Pope.--Discovery of an unexpected Official. The countless musquitos in the vicinity of Fort Pillow, during the month of April, 1862, must have had strong Secession sympathies; they certainly were bitter enemies of the Nationalists, and phlebotomized them without mercy. They never were so numerous and venomous before at that season of the year, in that latitude, and they bled our soldiers and sailors as perseveringly as did ever Dr. Sangrado his system-murdered patients. Those annoying insects were always vigilant, and had the honor of extracting the earliest sanguinary fluid during the bombardment. They had no fear of gunboats or mortars, artillery or bayonets. They recognized no distinction in rank, attacking Commodores and Captains, Bohemians and Brigadiers alike. One hundred did I slay, even while writing half a dozen lines; and yet there were thousands to supply their places. They seemed as anxious to die as the Rebels pretend to be. The difference between them was, they did die, and the Rebels did not--when they could help it. Mortifying reflection to vain-glorious Man! Musquitos are braver than the three hundred devoted Lacedaenionians who fought and fell beneath the shade of Xerxes' arrows. Sleep was often an impossibility, on the Fleet or in camp; and a number of the Bohemians rose one morning with their optics so nearly closed, from the attack of the musquitos, that the poor fellows would have been entirely excusable if they had taken what, in bar-room parlance, is classically called, an eye-opener. Confound the musquitos! I used to exclaim every minute. They were the pests of the South, and of sum...

(The sketches in this volume, begun more than two years ag...)
The sketches in this volume, begun more than two years ago, have been continued from time to time in the midst of journalistic duties, as personal observation and inquiry furnished new facts and illustrations of the Great City. These chapters have been written to represent the outer and inner life that makes up the beauty and deformity, the good and evil, the happiness and misery, which lie around us here so closely interwoven, that only charity can judge them wisely and well. In Faith and Hope the world will disagree, But all mankinds concern is Charity. All must be false that thwart this one great end, And all of God, that bless mankind or mend. J. H. B. (Kindle version of vintage magazine article originally pub...)
Kindle version of vintage magazine article originally published in 1874. Contains lots of great info and illustrations seldom seen in the last 140 years. Read excerpt - Nathan Mayer Rothschild far exceeded his father or any of his brothers in commercial genius. His attention was early called to England as an arena for action (he had not then become a partner), and thither he journeyed soon after reaching his majority. He commenced his career in Manchester as a money-lender, with less than $500, the cotton interest being then in its infancy there. Of course, as they say in Britain, he got on. At the end of five years he had $1,000,000 - a rate of interest on his original capital which ought to satisfy the archfiend of pawnbrokers—and with this sum he went to London. So large were his transactions in the metropolis that one of the Jewish grandees of the city, Levi Cohen, selected him as an eligible candidate for the vacancy of son-in-law. Cohen became alarmed after the union on account of Nathan's apparently desperate speculations, believing the young man must soon be ruined. The latter calmed the paternal apprehensions, saying, "You have given me but one of your daughters, when it would have been an excellent stroke of business if you had given me all your daughters. Then they would have died a great deal richer than they will now." Nathan speedily won his place in the world's capital. His ventures in the public funds always turned out luckily. He was as bold as astute, entering into competition with the then immensely powerful banking house of Goldsmid, and undertaking what the Barings, Couttses, and Hopes lacked the nerve to engage in. While ancient firms were timid or tottering, he had his first transactions with the government. Wellington, while actively engaged on the Peninsula, in 1810, had made some drafts which the Treasury could not meet, and which the Hebrew banker, anticipating the result of the struggle on the Continent, purchased at a liberal discount, renewed them to the government, and finally redeemed them at par. It was a capital operation in every sense, bringing him into close and confidential re¬lations with the ministry, and vastly enlarging both his opportunities and connections. The government employed him to transmit subsidies to the Continental powers, and he faithfully performed the task. He had the advantage of the earliest and most trust¬worthy intelligence from Frankfort, and was in a position to return it in kind. Before long all ordinary means of communication were insufficient for his rapidly growing enterprise, and he determined to use carrier-pigeons and fast-sailing boats of his own for the transmission of news. Reports in cipher of all important events were tied under the wings of the birds, which were constantly arriving at the London of¬fices, while his agents were crossing the Channel in the stormiest weather under a perilous pressure of canvas. To this day the mail-boats between Boulogne and Folke¬stone follow the course marked out by the London operator for his own craft. Such was his restless energy that not un-frequently he hurried over to the Continent to watch with his own eyes the momentous issues of the time. His faith in the final downfall of Napoleon and the restoration of the Bourbons had never been shaken. When the wonderful Corsican returned from Elba, and all the armies outside of France marched with secret dread against the one indomitable foe who had beaten them on every field, Rothschild once more traversed the Channel.

Junius Henri Browne was born on October 14, 1833 in Seneca Falls, New York.
His boyhood was spent in Cincinnati, where Junius received his education at St. Xavier College.
At sixteen Junius Henri Browne went into his father's banking house but two years later left it for journalism. He served on several papers in Cincinnati and when the Civil War broke out became a war correspondent for the New York Tribune. For two years he followed the campaigns in the Southwest, witnessing several battles and the activities of the Union gunboat flotilla on the Mississippi.
On May 3, 1863, with two other journalists, he accompanied an expedition which tried to run the Vicksburg batteries. The boat was sunk, and the journalists were captured by the Confederates. One of them, Richard T. Colburn of the New York World, was promptly paroled but Browne and his Tribune colleague, Albert D. Richardson, were not so fortunate. Apparently because of their connection with that paper and their presumed abolitionist convictions they were kept in prison with no prospect of release before the end of the war.
Lieutenant-Colonel William H. Ludlow, agent for the exchange of prisoners, sought repeatedly, under special instructions from President Lincoln and Secretary Stanton, to obtain their liberation, but in vain (Official Records, Army). During a year and a half they were passed from prison to prison in Vicksburg, Jackson, Atlanta, Richmond--where they were incarcerated both in the famous Libby Prison and in Castle Thunder--and Salisbury.
Their privations and sufferings in these institutions are told by Browne in his book, Four Years in Secessia (1865) with complete naivete and the quiet assumption that adherence to the Confederate cause was in itself enough to turn ordinary human beings into creatures addicted to injustice, cruelty, and bad faith.
Browne and Richardson finally escaped from Salisbury with three companions and traveled four hundred miles through the enemy's country. They suffered greatly from cold, hunger, and fatigue but with aid received from negroes, bushwackers, and Union sympathizers they succeeded in reaching the Union lines at Knoxville.
After the war Browne was connected with the editorial staffs of the New York Times and the Tribune and acted as correspondent for many other newspapers throughout the country.
He died in New York City.
