In 1905 Powell had his architect, Henri Fouchaux, enlarge the Pierce building to 11 stories, and also expanded it north on an additional lot on Hudson Street; bronze lettering high up on the Hudson Street front reading "Powell Building" was installed at that time.
Henri Fouchaux was born in 1856 at Coytesville, New York, United States.
He began his career as superintendent for the firm of Schickel & Ditmars on the erection ot St. Joseph's Hospital at 143rd Street and St. Anne's Avenue, and later on other Catholic institutional buildings. In architectural work Mr. Fouchaux maintained an office in New York and for a number of years carried on a general practice. One of his important buildings was the Institution for the Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb on Riverside Drive at 163rd Street, also he designed and supervised the erection of thirty large apartment houses and a number of factory buildings in the city. His last executed commission was the Powell Chocolate Factory built at the corner of Canal and Sullivan Streets.
