(Prior to painting his murals or illustrating books, Thoma...)
Prior to painting his murals or illustrating books, Thomas Hart Benton would make preliminary drawings, whether in the studio or outdoors. This book brings together over 190 of his many drawings which reflect all of his styles and subjects. Benton was a small man - not quite five foot three - who liked to paint big: he covered nearly as much wall space in five years as Michaelangelo did in twenty. The central role that his drawing played in the construction of his murals is clearly explained in this artistic biography giving examples of each stage along the way. The process of making preliminary drawings allowed Benton to paint the murals themselves with seemingly carefree exuberance - a public performance that the theatrical artist thoroughly enjoyed. This work captures Benton's pugnacious personality and aims to reveal his life through his drawings. This study orginally accompanied a travelling exhibition of Benton's work, organized by the Henry Art Gallery in Seattle in 1990.

This book presents drawings that Andrew Wyeth retained for his own collection -- many preliminary to well-known paintings. Created over more than five decades, from 1951 to 2005, they range from portraits of family members and friends to vibrant depictions of objects, landscapes, and buildings in and around the artist's homes in Pennsylvania and Maine. These works reflect the insight, emotion, and technique that are uniquely his. They demonstrate Wyeth's extraordinary skill as a draftsman and the accuracy with which he sees light and dark, enabling him to model forms while suggesting the very substance and texture of what he sees. "I have always been powerfully affected by Andrew Wyeth's drawings and studies -- particularly those studies that do not attempt to cover the whole surface of the paper but instead focus on a few elements, so that the image seems to emerge magically from the empty white background, rather like a photograph that we observe in the process of development." -- Henry Adams

(American artist Albert Bloch lived in Munich from 1909 to...)
American artist Albert Bloch lived in Munich from 1909 to 1923, where he met and worked with Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, the founders of the revolutionary Blue Rider group. Until now, he has hardly been mentioned in any of the major accounts of the group. This text examines Bloch's complete oeuvre, including six paintings he contributed to the first Blue Rider exhibition, with illustrations of all his key works. An extensive anthology includes his correspondence with Kandinsky, Marc and other well-known contemporaries, as well as the texts of the lectures he gave after he returned to America in 1923 to teach. These include the "Denver Lecture", in which he provides a unique perspective of the times and talents of the Blue Rider artists. To preserve the literary style and integrity of Bloch's writings, these are reprinted in either the English or German language in which they were originally written.
