Born at Candlesby, Lincolnshire to The Reverend John Alington and Charlotte Bellingham, he was educated at Rugby School and Magdalen College, Oxford.

While studying at Oxford he made two appearances in first-class cricket for Oxford University in 1859 against the Marylebone Cricket Club and in The University Match against Cambridge University, scoring 12 runs. He was later a Reverend and an Inspector of Schools. Alington died at the village of his birth on 2 December 1928.
