Gazetted 31st Hunting- 118 donshire Regiment (now East Surrey), 1861. Proceeded to China, joining Service Companies at Tientsin. When regiment moved to Shanghai, 1862, was selected to command thirty rnen.
Attached for nine months to Royal Artillery, and served in various expeditions against Taeping rebels, 1862-1863, including capture of Nahzian, 27 April, Khading, 1 May, Tsingpoo, 12 May, Najow, 17 May, Chowlin, 20 May, and relief of Khading, 26 May. Also in expeditions near Khading and Nahzian, October and November 1862. Specially employed as Assistant Engineer on survey of country round Shanghai under Captain (afterwards Major-General) Gordon, during winter 1862-1863.
Extra aide-de-camp to CoL Hough commanding expedition to scour country in neighbourhood of Shanghai, 1863. Obtained First Class extra certificate School of Musketry, Hythe. Assistant Instructor of Musketry to 31st Regiment, 1865-1867.
Instructor, 1868-1874. Adjutant to 31st Regimental District, 1878. Joined Army Pay Department, 1878.
Served Egyptian Campaign 1882 as second officer in Treasury Chest Office at Headquarters. Accompanied Force from Alexandria to Isinailia and Cairo (medal and bronze star). Staff Paymaster, 1883.
Chief Paymaster, 1896. Retired, 1901. Colonel and Chief Paymaster, retired.
