Self-trained in archi¬tecture, the youth acquired training in draftsmanship while employed in the offices in Buffalo and other cities, and in 1891 began professional practice in Elmira in association with the late Joseph H. Pierce. In continuing that partnership during his long and busy career, Mr. Bickford was connected with the planning of both public and private buildings, among which were many fireproof schools in the state also in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
The firm’s most important works in Elmira include the City Hall, 1894; the Free Academy, 1913; Central unit of the South-side School; Central YMCA Building; Izzard Department Store; a number of buildings at Elmira College, and the Sanitarium and Nurses' Home at Clifton Springs, N. Y. In 1920 Mr. Bickford’s son, Robert T., was taken into the firm as an equal partner, and after his father’s decease continued practice under his own name.
