Bishop was born on 18 January in 1786 in London, United Kingdom where his father was a watchmaker and haberdasher.
Henry received his musical education from Francesco Bianchi, an Italian established in England.
At the age of 13, Bishop left full-time education and worked as a music-publisher with his cousin. Bishop's first composition, Angelina, was performed at the Theatre Royal, Margate, in 1804.
Two years late his Tamerlan et Bajazet was well received at the King's Theatre.
Bishop was appointed conductor and composer for the Covent Garden Theatre in 1810.
During the Philharmonic's first season in 1813, Bishop conducted its concerts on a number of occasions.
In 1825, he was named conductor at the Drury Lane Theatre.
He occupied the same post at Covent Garden in 1840.
In 1848 he was appointed professor of music at Oxford.
His operas include: The Maid of the Mill (1814), The Slave (1816), Maid Marian (1822), Clari (1823), Cortez (1823), Knights of the Cross (1826), and Under the Oak (1830).
In Clari occurs Bishop's famous song, Home, Sweet Home, the words written by John Howard Payne.
He wrote an oratorio, a cantata, and many songs and glees.
In 1841 he was appointed Reid Professor of Music in the University of Edinburgh, but resigned the office in 1843. In 1848 he became Heather Professor of Music at the University of Oxford until 1853.

Henry married to his second wife, the singer Ann Rivière, in 1831. She was twenty-three years younger than he, and they had three children. In 1839, Anna Bishop (as she was now known) abandoned her husband and three children to run off with her lover and accompanist.
