Served as private and officer in the 1st Berkshire Rifle Volunteers, 1872-1876. Gazetted to Alexandra Princess of Wales’s Own (Yorkshire Regiment), at that time 19th Regiment Princess of Wales’s Own (1st York North Riding), 1877, commanded 1st Battalion 1899-1903. D.A. and Quartermaster-General on lines of communication, Nile Expedition, 1884 - S5 (brevet major).
Served with 2nd P. War Office Yorkshire Regiment in the Tirah Expeditionary Force, 1897-1898 (medal and brevet Lieutenant-Colonel). Commanded 1st P.W.O. Yorkshire Regiment in the South African campaign, 1899-1902 (severely wounded at Paardeberg, 18 February 1900, Companion of the Bath). Assistant AdjutantGeneral, Army Schools, War Office, 1903-1907. Retired.
