(Excerpt from The Discoverers, Pioneers, and Settlers of N...)
Excerpt from The Discoverers, Pioneers, and Settlers of North and South America, From the Earliest Period (982) To the Present Time: Comprising the Lives of the Most Famous Discoveries, Explorers, and Conquerors of the New World Natural history, in especial, was at a sad discount. Peter Martyr, with classical fondness, records the appearance of Tritons in the waters of the New World; Columbus and Hudson chronicle with much particularity their respective encounters with shoals of mermaids and the Pilgrims of Plymouth honestly relate their alarm at the roar of lions prowling in the frozen forests of New England. One writer contended that India must be in the vicinity of Cuba, seeing that the parrots there answered so well to the description of Pliny; and another, near a century later, surmised an easy northerly passage to the same country, because the horns of a unicorne (doubtless brought from India by the tides had been found on some dreary shore of the Arctic ocean. Excerpt from The Eastern, or Old World, Embracing Ancient and Modern History, Vol. 1 At length, after~ stripping the whole country of its woods, the approaches were renewed, and the tall engines once more stood menacing the walls. Both parties were almost exhausted by the long contest, but especially the Jews, who had also famine to contend against. The wall fell, but another was discovered within. An attack of the enfeebled defenders was repulsed; and during the night a few resolute Romans, taking the enemy by surprise, stormed the wall. A day of hard fighting left the besiegers in possession of the strong fortress Antonia. Another fierce attack was made in vam upon the temple, now slippery with blood, and encumbered with corpses. At no time had the Jews fought with more desperate and unwearied courage than now, when outnumbered, famine-stricken, and reduced to the last extremity. They lived in the usual primitive manner, by hunting and fishing, and dwelt in miserable huts of wood or clay. Their religious rites, like those of the Britons, were Druidical, and human sacrifices were not unfrequent. (This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Henry Howard Brownell was born on February 6, 1820 in Providence, Rhode Island. His father was Dr. Pardon Brownell, a physician, brother of Bishop Thomas Church Brownell; his mother, Lucia de Wolf.
Henry had graduated from Washington (now Trinity) College, Hartford, in 1841.
In 1862 Brownell published in the Hartford (Connecticut) Evening Press a rhymed version of Farragut's "General Orders" which brought him to the commander's attention; and that the author's desire to witness a naval battle might be gratified, Farragut secured his appointment as master mate in the navy, from which position he was advanced to ensign with special duties on the Hartford as the commander's secretary.
He lived a quiet bachelor's life in East Hartford, Connecticut, to which place his family had moved when he was a child. Summers he found recreation sailing his cat-boat on Narragansett Bay.
After his graduation from Washington (now Trinity) College, Hartford, in 1841, he taught in Mobile, Alabama, for a period, but returning to Hartford, had been admitted to the bar in 1844. He soon turned from practise to literary work, in which he was associated with his brother.
In 1851 he published The People's Book of Ancient and Modern History, and in 1853 The Discoverers, Pioneers, and Settlers of North and South America. As early as 1847 he had published Poems, and in 1855 appeared Ephemerson, so called from a poem it contains dealing with conditions leading up to the Crimean War. In 1864 he published Lyrics of a Day, or Newspaper-Poetry by a Volunteer in the United States Service. A selection from these, entitled Lines of Battle, by M. A. De Wolfe Howe was published in 1912, and has an informing introduction.
His career ended in his fifty-second year after he had bravely endured a lingering death from cancer of the face.

(Excerpt from The Eastern, or Old World, Vol. 2: Embracing...)
His naval service was the one great episode in a comparatively short life. He came of seafaring ancestors, loved the sea, and a spirit of adventure was in him; yet he was of modest, retiring disposition, preeminently a scholar.
Considered as a whole, his poems are often tediously long, frequently imitative, and sometimes crude in form. His war poems, however, have high merit.
Quotes from others about the person
Oliver Wendell Holmes dubbed him "Our Battle Laureate".
Holmes called him one of the "most highly endowed persons" he had ever met, and Thomas Bailey Aldrich, in two poems bearing Brownell's name, pays high tribute to his worth as a man and poet.
