Entered United States Army during Civil War as Captain 64th Regiment Infantry Army of the Potomac, and took part in the operations around Richmond and Virginia under Generals Miles and Grant (promoted on Brigade Staff, and received brevet rank as Brevet-Major for gallant and meritorious conduct). Served on Executive Stall" Royal Military Tournament, 18S5 - 95.
Raised and commanded 24th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry for South Africa.
Operating on trek in Cape Colony, Orange River Colony, and the Transj vaal about 18 months. Appointed Commandant blockhouses in mountain passes by General Sir J. Doctorate. P. French, and commanded column with convoy to provision Fraserburg, then surrounded by rebels, who opposed and fought in the advance and return (South African War medal and 5 clasps, Companion of the Bath).
