Her second marriage to Thomas Thynne was a cause of great scandal when he was killed in a duel with her reputed lover. She quickly remarried Charles Seymour, 6th Duke of Somerset: as the Duchess of Somerset became notable for her influence over Queen Anne, and under the nickname "Carrots" was the subject of a violent attack by Jonathan Swift.
