Studied at Cheltenham College. St. John’s College, Cambridge (Bachelor of Arts. Graduated in Honours in Classics, 1892).
Entered army, 1894; appointed Lieutenant in Indian Staff Corps, 1896. Entered Bombay Political Department as a probationer, 1898, and was appointed Assistant Resident at Berbera, on the Somali Coast, 1898. His Britannic Majesty’s Vice-Consul, Berbera, Somaliland Protectorate, 189S-1906.
Sub-Commissioner and Consul, 1902-1906. Deputy Commissioner, 1904. Commissioner and Commander-in-Chief, 1906-1910. His (or Her) Majesty’s Governor and Commander-in-Chief, Uganda, since 1910.
