(Excerpt from Worship as an Element of Sanctuary Service ...)
Excerpt from Worship as an Element of Sanctuary Service The services of God's house, as usually conducted, may be regarded as comprising two great elements, Worship and In struction; and although these elements are mutually helpful, and, to some extent, interpenetrate each other, yet they may, in our examination, be separately and distinctly considered. Worship is the act of paying divine honor to the Supreme Be ing, and includes those parts of divine service whereof Jehovah himself is the immediate object. Instruction is the communi cation of knowledge from one mind to another, and includes whatever in the service is the acting of men, upon the autho rity and commission of God, on others. The first comprises the prayers and praises of the sanctuary; the latter is limited to the reading and preaching of the word. Henry Darling was born on December 27, 1823 at Reading, Pennsylvania, United States. He was the son of Judge William Darling, a native of Maine, and Margaretta Vaughn Smith.
Graduating at nineteen from Amherst College, he declined an appointment as instructor to take training for the ministry.
Since his religious connections were with the New School Presbyterian Church, he entered Union Theological Seminary. Desire for preparation for missionary work in the West led him a year later to Auburn Seminary, where he graduated in 1845.
After a year in charge of the Presbyterian Church at Vernon, New York, near Utica, Darling became pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Hudson. Thence in 1853 he went to the Clinton Street Church of Philadelphia, succeeding Joel Parker. During his eight successful years in this pastorate he began his long activity in general ecclesiastical affairs.
For nine years from 1854 he was permanent clerk of the General Assembly, and he served in the church’s missionary and educational organizations.
Compelled by illness in 1861 to resign his pastorate, he lived for three years in Germantown. During this time he wrote: The Closer Walk (1862), a devotional book which attained considerable fame, being republished in England and translated for use in India; “Worship as an Element of Sanctuary Service” (Presbyterian Quarterly Review, April 1862), an article which marked him as a pioneer in the movement among non-liturgical churches for betterment of worship; and Slavery and the War (1863), which was widely circulated as a pamphlet.
His best years were the seventeen spent in the pastorate of the Fourth Presbyterian Church of Albany, New York, beginning in 1864. Competent in all phases of church work, he was preeminently a pastor, and was warmly regarded for constant personal ministry.
His publications, besides the book mentioned, were contributions to the Presbyterian Quarterly Review and other periodicals, and sermons.
