Excerpt from The England and Holland of the Pilgrims Most of. The contents of this work were collected by my father, the late Dr. Henry M. Dexter. To this task he devoted much of his time for many years. Of Pilgrim descent and born almost within sight of Plymouth Rock, he desired to give to the world a more complete record than any which had been written of the religious and ecclesiastical movement in England that made the Pilgrims what they were, and of their emigration to Holland and their life there before they came to America. Henry Martyn Dexter was born on August 13, 1821 at Plympton, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. He was the son of the Reverend Elijah and Mary (Morton) Dexter, and sixth in descent from Thomas Dexter, who was a prominent colonist of Lynn by 1630.
In 1836, at the age of fifteen, Henry entered Brown, changing in his sophomore year to Yale, where he graduated in 1840, having partially supported himself by teaching summers during his college course.
On graduation he became principal of the Academy at Rochester, Massachusetts, for a year, after which he attended Andover Theological Seminary, graduating in 1844.
On November 6, 1844 Dexter was ordained pastor of the newly organized church in Manchester, New Hampshire, where he remained for four and a half years.
On April 18, 1849, he became pastor of the Pine Street Church in Boston and continued there for eighteen years in spite of internal troubles in the church which were not of his own making.
A few months after his move to Boston he became a special contributor to the newly established Congregationalist, and for some years was special correspondent of the New York Independent.
From 1856 he was editor-in-chief. In 1854 he took the leadership of the New England clergy in drawing up resolutions opposing the Nebraska Bill, going to Washington to present the protest personally to Congress. In the same year he moved to Roxbury.
In 1867 he had a call, which had been made previously also, to a church in California, and was about to accept when he was offered the editorship and partial ownership of the combined Congregationalist and Boston Recorder. He resigned his pastorate and from that time devoted himself to editorial and historical work, from 1873 making his home in New Bedford.
Dexter’s passion for the advancement of Congregationalism was life-long. He wrote much on that topic and also on early New England history. Among his more important books may be mentioned: Congregationalism (1865); The Church Policy of the Pilgrims (1870); As to Roger Williams (1876); The Congregationalism of the Last 300 Years (1880); A Handbook of Congregationalism (1880).
His writings for the periodical press were voluminous, and his editorial contribution of considerable value, in the case of such works as Mount’s Relation and Church’s King Philip’s War. Much of his writing was special pleading and marred by his strong bias in favor of the Puritans and Congregationalists, but it was accurate in detail.
He was chairman of the committee appointed to erect in Leyden a memorial to John Robinson.
In 1890 he was chosen one of the representatives of American Congregationalism at the Conference held in London, but was found dead in his bed on November 13 of that year.

Dexter was a member of many historical societies, including the Massachusetts Historical and the American Antiquarian.
Dexter married Emeline Augusta Palmer, daughter of Simeon Palmer of Boston on November 19, 1844.
