(Most of the work that led to this book was done before Wo...)
Most of the work that led to this book was done before World War II, and a draft was completed in 1946-47. Since that time new ideas and events made us look differently at the whole American past. Nothing has shifted more than our perspectives on American Religious history. In the late nineteenth century a series of painful shocks jolted the American people toward a realization of profound change, Suddenly or gradually, many were forced to realize that they were no longer living in an agrarian democracy, but in an industrial nation already increasingly dominated by giant corporations. The resulting readjustment of traditional social thought is, of course, by no means finished yet. Its first stages, however, were accomplished between 1877 and the middle nineties. During this period of recurrent depression, doubt and struggle the Protestant churches still maintained, to a greater extent than is usually realized, their historic position of intellectual and moral leadership. The present volume is not intended primarily as a contribution to religious history but as a study of an important phase of American social thought.
