Henry Hadley (1871-1937) was one of the leading American composers of the inter-war years and before. He developed his art from music founded in that of the German late romantic composers, but he subsequently searched for the roots of a distinctive American style, his musical car-ride Scherzo Diabolique being the Short Ride in a Fast Machine of its time. This Dutton Epoch survey presents six varied scores - all splendid discoveries - from across Hadley's career in mostly world premiere recordings. //// 1 Scherzo Diabolique op.135 (1934) 7:05 Salome - tone poem op.55 (1906)* Tondichtung für Grosses Orchester nach Oscar Wilde's Trauerspiel 2 i Lento e molto tranquillo - 7:59 3 ii Con ardore - 6:34 4 iii Andante - 4:27 5 iv Salome's tanz - 4:07 6 v Moderato con fermezza - 2:56 7 vi Più lento 4:10 8 Cleopatra's Night op.90 (1918): Intermezzo 4:50 Ileana Ruhemann solo flute 9 Othello Overture op.96 (1919) 14:34 San Francisco op.121 (1931) 10 i The Harbour: Moderato e tranquillo - Allegro con brio 5:16 11 ii Chinese Quarter: Allegretto moderato 4:14 12 iii Mardi Gras: Allegro non troppo 4:08 13 The Enchanted Castle Overture op.117 (1933) 7:44
