Sexual subjects, out of consideration for the opinions and feelings of a large class in the community, have been treated in a companion volume, entitled Sexual Health This work is not complete without that, and it is hoped that the teachings there contained will gain a wider circulation and be extended by parents to a larger number of the rising generation, because of the separate form in which they have been presented.

Excerpt from Sexual Health: A Companion to "Modern Domestic Medicine"; A Plain and Practical Guide for the People in All Matters Concerning the Organs of Reproduction in Both Sexes and All Ages
The following pages form a very important part of the author's Modern Domestic Medicine. They have been put by themselves between separate covers in order that the method of their use in the family might be de termined in each case in accordance with the views of the father or mother. A work on domestic medicine to be of any service must be at hand when wanted, and many persons are not willing that such information as these pages contain, should be within easy reach of boys and girls. The plan of publishing the following chap ters separately enables such persons to use the author's Domestic with perfect freedom, as a family guide; while it avoids the necessity that would otherwise exist of allowing Impor tant omissions in that Work.

The Art of the Musician: A Guide to the Intelligent Appreciation of Music (Classic Reprint)
(It is intended chiefly to stimulate investigation of that...)
It is intended chiefly to stimulate investigation of that much neglected subject music and may serve as a text-book for instruction. It is designed to emphasize the distinction between the real study of music and the study of the arts of playing and singing which has so long been mistaken for it. But it is calculated most of all to supply the demand of those mature lovers of music who wish to understand the aims and purposes of a composer, some of the methods of his work, and to get some ground for fairly judging his attainments and results.

Teaching As A Science: An Address Read Before The Music Teachers' National Assoc. At Buffalo, N.Y., July, 1880, And Other Essays
Henry Granger Hanchett, Music Teachers National Association
Schirmer, 1882
Husic; Music
Henry Granger Hanchett was an American physician, musician, and educator. He also composed an Easter anthem, a Te Deum and a Benedictus for chorus.
Background
Henry Hanchett was born on August 29, 1853, in Syracuse, New York, United States, the son of Milton Waldo and Martha Anna (Huntington) Hanchett. He was the great-great-grandson of John Hanchett, a lieutenant in the Colonial wars, and a great-grandson of Oliver Hanchett, a captain in the Revolution.
Education
Henry was educated in the public schools of Syracuse, New York. At the age of seven he played the piano with some skill and at sixteen was a church organist. Recurrent attacks of blindness are said to have caused him to study medicine in order that he might understand and treat his own case. He then received the degree of M. D. from the New York Homeopathic College in 1884.
Career
Henry Hanchett practised for a time medicine but soon made music his chief preoccupation. His interest in pathology continued, however, and he published several popular medical works, among them, The Elements of Modern Domestic Medicine: A Plain and Practical Hand-book (1887), and Sexual Health (1887; 4th ed. , 1897).
Hanchett's activities in the field of music were far flung and long continued. He gave courses in piano, musical history, pedagogy, appreciation of music, musical theory, or music pedagogy in Martha Washington College, Virginia (1876-1878); Beethoven Conservatory, St. Louis, Missouri (1880-1881); Adelphi College, Brooklyn, New York (1899-1903); National Park Seminary, Forest Glen, Maryland (1907-1910); Brenau College, Gainesville, Georgia (1913-1915). In addition he served as organist at the Church of the Ascension (1884-1887) and Marble Collegiate Church (1889-1893), New York; and at the Central Congregational Church, Brooklyn (1893-1898); as a choral and orchestral conductor in various places; and as musical director at Chautauqua assemblies.
Beginning in 1891, Hanchett toured the United States and Canada from Nova Scotia to the Pacific Coast, as a recital pianist and lecturer, appearing before universities, colleges, and women’s clubs. He also lectured on music at the Brooklyn Institute (1894-1903) and in the public schools of New York (1896-1909). He made a specialty of “Beethoven Readings, ” and up to 1911 he had given some three hundred lecture recitals in New York alone. His death occurred at Siasconset, Massachusetts.
Achievements
Henry Hanchett is best remembered as the inventor of the “sostenuto” or third tone-sustaining pedal now used on all grand pianos. He also published the following well-known books: Teaching as a Science (1882); The Art of the Musician (1905); and An Introduction to the Theory of Music (1916).
Hanchett was an active member of various scientific, historical, and musical societies, a founder of the American Guild of Organists.
Connections
Hanchett was twice married: first, on June 22, 1886, to Ophelia Murphey of Dover, Delaware, and second, on February 22, 1896, to Grace Mather of New York.
