Craik was Secretary of the Scottish Education Department from 1885 to 1904. He was made a Privy Councillor in 1918, and in the New Year Honours List 1926, he was made a baronet, of Kennoway, in the County of Fife. Craik married on 17 December 1873 to Fanny Esther Duffield, daughter of Charles Duffield.
They had two children: George Lillie (1874–1929) and Henry Duffield (1876–1955).
George succeeded his father in the baronetcy, but died two years later.

He was an elected Member of Parliament (Member of Parliament) for Glasgow and Aberdeen Universities from 1906 to 1918, and for the Combined Scottish Universities from 1918 until his death in 1927.
