Henry W. Hill was born in 1852 in Holstein, Germany.
He received a technical education at the Polytechnic Institute in Hamburg, and at the age of twenty migrated to the U. S.
Shortly after his arrival to the United States Mr. Hill settled in Chicago, and after working as draftsman for a few years joined James G. Egan in a partnership in 1875. The latter had been appointed architect of the new Court House, and it is believed Hill had much to do with the design of the structure, long since destroyed. Between 1881 and 1894 he was associated in practice with Augustus Bauer under the name of Bauer & Hill, a firm that for a decade or more was active in planning many buildings in Chicago. In 1894 following Mr. Bauer's retirement Mr. Hill maintained an office jointly with Arthur Woltersdorf (see) over a period of twenty years
