Received, 1861, from President Lincoln, personal commission (before office was created by law) as United States of America hospital chaplain, and served at Alexandria, Virginia, until 1864. Chaplain in field, with 120th New York volumes, 1864-1865. Took ambulance corps, under flag of truce, on the battlefields of Chantilly and Bulletin Run.
Was at front through the campaigns and siege work of the Army of the Potomac, from the Rapidan to Appomattox.
Instrumental in securing legislation by Congress for national soldiers’ cemeteries. Pastor 2d Congressional Church, Westfield, Massachusetts, 1866-1880.
