Aldine edition of The Poetical Works of the Earl of Surrey published in 1831, has been critically and carefully revised, and some additional notes appended explanatory of words now become obsolete. The Poems have been collated with the edition of the Songs and Sonnets edited by Bishop Percy and George Steevens, as well as by the recent reprint of the first edition of Tottel s Miscellany by John Payne Collier, Esq., whose ready kindness is acknowledged for the loan of the sheets of that rare work. The text of the two books of Virgil sJE neid, has also been revised by the accurate edition of William Bolland, Esq. published by the Roxburghe Club. In the Memoir of the Earl of Surrey, some of the statements of his heroic career have been corrected, and other particulars relating to him supplied, which had escaped the researches of Dr. Nott ad his later biographers. Few names amongst our Early Poets are so familiar to all classes of readers as that of the gallant and accomplished Surrey. The affecting incidents supposed to lie at the springs of his poetry, his brilliant reputation as a representative of English chivalry in the age of the Field of the Cloth of Gold, and the tragical close of his career in the prime of his life and powers, have invested his memory with a romantic interest. Much of the romance has been dissipated by investigation; but the attraction of his name still survives in the refinement and beauty of his verse, and in his just claim to be considered as a writer to whose genius English poetry owes large obligations. The family of the Howards is of high blood and antiquity. Traced by some authorities to a period antecedent to the Conquest, it subsequently descended from Sir William Howard, who was Chief Justice of the Common Pleas in the reigns of the first two Edwards, and became, by intermarriages, twice connected with royally before it acquired its greatest distinction in the person of the poet. The first of these royal alliances was that of Sir Eobert Howard with Margaret Mowbray, daughter of Thomas, Duke of Norfolk, (E arl Marshal) and great-grand-daughter, on her mothers side, of Thomas de Brotherton, Earl of Norfolk, a younger son of Edward the First. Henry Howard was born in 1517 in Hunsdon, Hertfordshire, the eldest son of Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk by his second wife Elizabeth Stafford, a daughter of Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham. He was thus descended from King Edward I on his father's side and from King Edward III on his mother's side.
As a boy, he made translations from Latin, Italian, and Spanish. Henry VIII chose him as companion for his natural son Henry at Windsor and at the French court, and considered him as a husband for Princess Mary; but Surrey, when fifteen, married Frances de Vere. He served as earl marshal at Anne Boleyn's trial in 1536. Surrey was confined at Windsor in 1537 for striking a courtier and was twice imprisoned in 1542 for sending a challenge, and in 1543 for shooting stonebows at London citizens and houses. He campaigned in Scotland in 1542 and in France during the next four years. Charles V praised him, and Henry VIII appointed him lieutenant general commanding the English forces. The earl of Hertford, however, superseded him and had him sent to the Tower in 1546. Convicted of treason on a trumped-up charge of assuming royal arms, Surrey was beheaded on January 19, 1547.
Surrey's first published poem was an epitaph (1542) on Sir Thomas Wyatt. Following Wyatt, Surrey naturalized the sonnet in English, establishing the new English form of three quatrains and a couplet. His sonnets, published in Tottel's Miscellany (1557), inspired Sir Philip Sidney and other Elizabethans. Surrey is also important for introducing blank verse into English by his translations from Vergil's Aeneid.
