Accompanied Sir Douglas Forsyth’s mission to Yarkand and Kashgar, 1873-1874, as geographer. Employed on special sendee in China, 1876. Was awarded, 1878, the Victoria medal of Royal Geog.
Society for explorations in Turkestan. Appointed additional military attache at Constantinople during Turko-Russian War, 1877-1878. Accompanied the Turkish armies throughout the campaign in Asia (siege and relief of Kars, battles of Yeshek Ilias, and Deveh Boyoun, etc.), Turkish war medal.
Consul for Kurdistan, 1878-S2. Superintended International relief operations at Scio after the great earthquake of 1881. Military attach^, Constantinople, 1882-1889, during which time he was frequently employed on special missions.
Consul-General in Syria, 1890-1894. Has frequently acted as II.M. Charge d’Affaires at Bucharest. British Delegate on the European Commission of the Danube, and His Britannic Majesty Consul-General for Roumania 1894-1906.
