Member Virginia House of Delegates from Westmoreland County, 1810-1813. Served as major 36th Infantry, United States Army, War of 1812. Employee Post Office Department, also political writer for John Calhoun, 1824-1826.
Credited with literary form of Jackson’s presidential inaugural address. Appointed consul-general to Algiers, but rejected by unanimous vote of the United States Senate, 1839. Spent later life abroad, mainly in Paris, France.
