De la Beche medallist. Associate, 1876; engaged in iron and steel works in Nova Scotia, Swansea, and near Edinburgh. Gold mining in South America and West Africa.
Gold and diamond mining in Transvaal and South Africa. Commissioner on the Trinidad Asphalte Enquiry, 1902. Member International Jury, Brussels Exhibition, 1910.
Professor of Mining, Durham College, of Science, since 1890, and Consulting Mining and Metallurgical Engineer.
