In Case 4, where the pelvic peritoneum seemed scarcely abraded, the results show that it would have been wiser to have adopted one of two alternatives. A vaginal opening might have been made and the parts protected by iodoform gauze, or the depressed portion of the peritoneum have been sutured across at its upper part. It is probable this would have been the better Of the measures to have adopted, since it would have added very little to the traumatism and taken less time than the opening Of the vagina and the introduction Of the vaginal drain. It was, however, covered with a thick layer of aristol, which I can not doubt would prove ample protection in the majority of instances. Excerpt from The Climatic Treatment of Disease: Western North Carolina as a Health Resort Based upon the belief that an aseptic atmosphere is of the first importance in the selection of a climate for the benefit of sufferers from a certain class of diseases, examinations of the atmosphere have been carefully made to demonstrate its purity. Miguel and Freudenreich found that microphytes were rare at 800 metres, and absolutely wanting-at metres above the sea level. For physical reasons, high alti tudes have been believed to be beneficial in early phthisis, and, influenced by the later demonstrationsof a bacillary cause, this aseptic state of the atmos phere is theoretically accepted as promising good results, and sanitary. Stations for mountain-air treat ment of consumptives have been established at sev eral selected points in the Alps, where the comforts of home life are furnished to invalids. Of these health resorts, Davos and St. Moritz are the most popular. St. Moritz is feet and Davosis over feet above the sea level, and the latter has become noted for winter treatment, although the average temperature from November to March' is only 23° F. The number of visitors at Davos last winter was over and careful provision is made for home comfort. The patients are urged to be active out of doors within the limit of fatigue. Each year adds to the number of invalids resorting to these mountain sanitaria, and the statistics show good re sults. It should, however, be borne in mind that the cases sent to these resorts are those selected in the incipient stages of disease, and this is to be taken into the account in the deductions that the recoveries average one-fourth also the time elapsing after the treatment has been too short to determine with accuracy the results. This pertains in criticism to the statistics of other similar localities, but it is by no means an easy task to secure satisfac tory data, and such a problem can never be subjected to a matliematicala analysis. Excerpt from Chronic Inversion of the Uterus: Reduction by a New Method Reprinted from The Journal of the American Medical Association, July 20. 1889. It is my purpose in this paper to consider only chronic cases of inversion of the uterus, as they are usually presented to the attention of the gyne oologist. Cases of partial inversion occurring at. Labor are believed to be far more common than the teachings of the text-books would lead us to accept. More than once it has occurred under my own observation, and in a recent discussion upon the subject, by the members of the Boston Gynecological Society, a considerable number of cases were reported. It was undoubtedly more frequent during the earlier practice of the midwives, when traction upon the umbilical cord was commonly practiced, in order to bring away the placenta. There is much disagreement of opinion as to the cause of inversion even in these cases, although it is con ceded that the uterus is generally. Very flaccid, and muscular contraction of the organ is either irreg ular or wanting. When the inversion is complete, under such circumstances, the haemorrhage and shock are often so great as to endanger life. By whatever method at tempted it is the failure to do this which gives failure in result. I do not remember ever to have dissected the parts, however seemingly irregular was the distension Of the veins, without finding the whole plexus varicosed. The circulation through the veins, when once changed to cause dilatation, almost necessarily involves the whole plexus. Emphasis should be made in clinical instruction upon the early voluntary evacuation of the bladder, in the position easiest to accomplish it. The bowel may be safely moved the third or fourth day. Henry Orlando Marcy was born on June 23, 1837 in Otis, Massachussets, and was the son of Smith and Fanny (Gibbs) Marcy. He was descended on both sides from Puritan stock and his paternal grandfather, Thomas Marcy, was one of the first settlers of northern Ohio. Smith Marcy was a school-teacher and a veteran of the War of 1812.
After attending Wilbraham Academy and Amherst College, Henry O. Marcy was graduated by the Harvard Medical School with the class of 1864. The year before his graduation, however, he entered the Massachusetts militia as a surgeon and served in various campaigns of the Civil War, especially at the siege of Charleston. Following the war, he returned to Boston, where he practised for a short time, being greatly influenced by Horatio R. Storer, a pioneer surgeon in diseases of women. Feeling that his education was incomplete, Marcy spent two years in Europe studying pathology and surgery; in 1869 he was with Virchow, the pathologist, in Berlin; and the next year with the surgeons Paget and Spencer Wells, in London.
In the last year of the war he was appointed medical director of Florida. His work was characterized by common sense, for he did much to prevent dysentery among the troops by supplying them with fresh and well-cooked food, and at Charleston his house-to-house cleaning, with a force of five hundred men, made a sanitary city out of one that was pest-ridden. Later he went to Edinburgh, where he became the first American pupil of Joseph Lister, the founder of antiseptic surgery. On returning to Boston, he attempted to interest Henry J. Bigelow in Lister's methods, but, according to Marcy, Bigelow "declared that it was only another fad, unworthy of consideration". The younger man could make no headway against the powerful Bigelow, and accordingly retired to Cambridge, Massachussets, where in 1880 he established a private hospital for diseases of women. Through the use of the Lister methods and many innovations devised by himself, he attained considerable success in abdominal operations. He began to use catgut and other animal sutures, especially of the absorbable type which could be left in the wound, and was a pioneer in the use of antiseptic solutions and the disinfection of the surgeon's hands before operation, as well as in the use of rubber gloves. All these new methods were tested out carefully in Marcy's private hospital. Furthermore, he and his assistants were among the earliest bacteriologists in America. Marcy was an ardent advocate of the American Medical Association, and year after year, over a long period of time, presented the results of his work before that body. Partly through his persistent efforts, Listerism was accepted in the United States and he should, undoubtedly, receive the credit for introducing the method of antiseptic wound treatment into America. His publications include a long list of papers covering various aspects of surgery, especially the treatment of hernia, and a few on the history of surgery in America. Notable titles are: The Radical Cure of Hernia by the Antiseptic Use of Carbolized Catgut Ligature (1879); The Best Methods of Treating Operative Wounds (1882); Recent Advances in Abdominal Surgery (1887); A Treatise on Hernia (1889); and The Scientific Rationale of Modern Wound Treatment (1891). Historical papers that throw light on his own career include: "The Early History of Abdominal Surgery in America"; "The Surgical Service of the Civil War Then and Now the Progress of Fifty Years"; and "The Semicentennial of the Introduction of Antiseptic Surgery in America".
Marcy became the president of the American Medical Association in 1891. His most important original contribution to American surgery, was the development of animal sutures. Marcy did much to develop Cambridge and was instrumental in building the Harvard Bridge, the Charles River Basin, with its Esplanade, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, of whose site he was chief owner.

Marcy was married to Sarah E. Wendell of Great Falls, N. H. , in 1863. His only son became a physician and was associated for many years with his father.
