At the age of twenty he graduated in Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and during the next two years continued his studies at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris.
Returning to his native city Mr. Goodwin practiced professionally for a few years, but closed his office in 1901 to join the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania's School of Architecture. Later, between 1904-1906, he taught at Washington University in St. Louis, and from 1906 to 1918 held the Chair of Architecture at Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh.
Resuming private practice in 1919, Mr. McGoodwin opened an office in Philadelphia and carried on work there under his own name until shortly before his death when he retired to his home at Lumberville, Pa.
McGoodwin is chiefly known for his influential publication Architectural Shades and Shadows, written while on the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania.
A former member of the Philadelphia Chapter, A. I. A. in 1919 he was advanced to Institute Fellowship in recognition of his work in the field of architectural education.
