Every few years it seems to be necessary to take a new Observation of certain Old theological doctrines which have filled a large place in the teachings of the church. Perhaps we think differently about them now from what we did some time ago, and by the new survey a progress of Opinion may be proved, just as the mariner may see how far he has floated on the bosom of the ocean, by looking again at the buoy that has been erected amid its surging currents. And as in the case of the mariner, all well-meant Observations are considered worth reporting, to be corrected by those who stand in higher places of influence, so I may venture to describe some of the bearings of the doctrine of human nature, as they appear at the present time amid the changes of views through which we have all been passing.

Henry Adolphus Miles was an American clergyman and historian.
Background
Henry Adolphus Miles was the sixth child of Rev. John and Mary (Denny) Miles, and a descendant of John Miles who in 1639 was a freeman of Concord, Massachusetts. Born in Grafton, Massachusetts, where his father was a pastor, Henry graduated from Brown University in 1829.
Education
Espousing Unitarian doctrines, Miles attended the Harvard Divinity School and was ordained at Hallowell, Maine, December 19, 1832.
Career
After serving as minister at Hallowell for four years, Miles was called in December 1836 to be the second pastor of the South Congregational (Unitarian) Church, Lowell, Massachusetts. An address to the people commending the young minister was delivered by Rev. John Pierpont, of the Hollis Street Church, Boston, which was subsequently published as a model of its kind. In the first years of his Lowell pastorate, Miles wrote a history of that then new factory city, entitled Lowell as It Was and Is. The little book, published in 1845, went through several editions. It provoked a local controversy, in which the author's critics charged him with drawing an unduly roseate picture of industrial conditions at Lowell, presumably for the purpose of gaining the favor of the mill owners. "It was to repel the charge that large corporations led to oppression, corruption, and nepotism, that Dr. Miles seems to have written his history. Fully half of the book is devoted to showing that the mills of Lowell were managed by wise and benevolent men, and in a manner calculated to promote the moral welfare and the highest good, not only of the operatives but of the community at large". Later historians, however, have found in Miles's work a valuable sourcebook, even though it may be admitted that he was disposed to discover mainly what is right in any given social picture. Miles remained at Lowell until 1853 when he became secretary of the American Unitarian Association, with headquarters at Boston. At this same time, he began to edit the Quarterly Journal, a denominational periodical, of which he continued in charge until 1857. In 1859, he relinquished his secretarial service in order to have leisure for independent literary work and for travel. Periods of European residence occupied about ten years. From 1865 to 1871, he was settled over the Unitarian church at Longwood, Massachusetts, and from 1876 until his death he was pastor and pastor emeritus at Hingham. He was buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, Massachussets.
Achievements
Miles compiled Genealogy of the Miles Family (1840) and published a number of religious works, which reflect a gentle and optimistic spirit.
