Career
He was appointed by Governor John Bigler to serve out Senator David C. Broderick"s term following his predecessor"s death in a duel. The couple traveled overland to California during the gold rush of 1849. They had two children, Kate (b 1851) and David Rose (b 1853).

In 1845 Haun was the Prosecuting Attorney of Scott County, Kentucky.
1846
In 1846 he was the delegate of the Iowa Constitutional Convention. 1851–1854
From 1851 to 1854 he was justice for the Yuba County Court.
1859 - 1860
From November 1859 to February 1860 he served as senator Haun died on June 6, 1860 in Marysville, California at age 45, three days after returning from Washington, District of Columbia
