Background
He was the son of William Ponsonby, 1st Viscount Duncannon and brother of Brabazon Ponsonby, 1st Earl of Bessborough.

Career
He sat in the Irish House of Commons for Fethard from 1715 to 1727. In 1727 he was elected for both Clomines and Inistioge, sitting for the latter constituency until his death. He reached the rank of Major-General and was killed at the Battle of Fontenoy.
