Henry Rice

Rice, Henry was born on June 28, 1835 in Bamberg, Bavaria, Germany. Son of Siligman and Henrietta (Newman) Rice.

Education

Educated Polytechnic school and Realschule, Bamberg. Came to the United States in 1850.

Career

In New York, 1850-1853. In clothing business as Henry Rice & Company, Jacksonville, Illinois, 1853-1861. Military storekeeper, United States Army, 1861-1862.

Established dry goods business, Memphis, Tennessee, 1862, firm of Rice, Stix & Company, remaining there until 1879, when business was removed to Saint Louis, later incorporated as Rice-Stix Dry Goods Company, of which was president, later chairman advisory board Has lived in New York, since 1866, and represents the firm in the East.

Trustee Baron de Hirsch Fund. Identified with many philanthropic and charitable organizations
