He attended West Point for a time, but did not graduate. He later made a living as an editor and as a lawyer During the American Civil War, Stanton served as the adjutant general of the Confederate States of America.
Afterward, he returned to editing.
Stanton died in Frankfort, Kentucky, in 1899.
