Studied at Cheltenham College.
Joined 1st Battalion the Gloucestershire Regiment, 1898, from the Militia. Served South African War, 1899-1900. Present in the engagements at Rietfontein and Lombard’s Kop, at the siege of Ladysmith, including a night sortie on Gun Hill (recommended for extra regimental promotion to rank of Captain, despatches), and in the operations of the Drakensberg Defence Force, including the seizure of Van Reenen’s Pass.
Also served with Mounted Infantry, 1901- 1902. Operations in Orange River Colony (dangerously wounded, Companion of the Distinguished Service Order). Decorated: leading a night sortie on Gun Hill from Ladysmith during the siege. Companion of the Distinguished Service Order 1900; Manchester Regiment.
