Engaged in scientific pursuits from early age. Discoveries: indefinite increase of the magnetic and electric forces from quantities indefinitely small, 1864. The synchronising property of alternating currents to control the rotations of a number of dynamos, an essential feature in the great installation at Niagara and other electro-generating stations, 1868.
New multiple relations among the atomic weights by which the existence of undiscovered elements and their properties have been predicted, 1878. That the moving force of celestial bodies is as the square of the velocity, and inversely proportional to the square of the distance, 1909. Inventions: the dynamo-electric machine, 1864-1865.
Generated powerful electric light for the first time therefrom, 1865. Applied the dynamo, with other of his inventions, to the production of the search-light in the Royal Navy, and to the electro-deposition of metals from their solutions, 1868-1880. Magnetarium for reproducing the phenomena of terrestrial magnetism and the secular variation of the mariner’s compass, 1890.
