Mr. Worthman arrived in this country when a youth, and after several years of architectural training, in 1886 established an office in Chicago. Later (in 1903) he joined J. G. Steinbach in partnership (Worthman & Steinbach), and during twenty-five years of practice under the firm name established a reputation as a specialist in church work.
Among the various ecclesiastical buildings in Chicago designed by Worthman & Steinbach were the House of the Good Shepherd; Church of St. Mary of the Angels; Roman Catholic Church, Our Lady of Pompeii; St. Hyacinth’s Catholic Church; Loyola Academy, and the adjoining Cudahy Hall of Science; also two Lutheran churches, St. James, and Church of the Redeemer. In addition the firm prepared plans for a number of Hospitals, including the Mother Cabrini and the Lutheran Memorial Hospital in Chicago, also a number of churches and hospital buildings in Michigan and Wisconsin, and outside of Chicago in Illinois.
During his latter years Mr. Worthman lectured before classes in Lutheran schools on the subject of Church Architecture, also he was the author of a booklet entitled "The Advent of Church Architecture According to Bible History."
A member of the Illinois Society of Architects after 1898, well known and respected by his colleagues.
