Educated Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts.

Career

Began study of law in father’s office at 19. Raised a troop of cavalry and was second in command Lieutenant 9th Illinois Cavalry, October 9-November 6, 1861. Second lieutenant 4th United States Artillery, October 24, 1861.

First lieutenant, May 3. 1863; appointed a.-d.-c. to Major General Hallock, July 12, 1865. Resigned November 19, 1869.

Bvtd. First lieutenant, April 7, 1862, for gallant and meritorious services at battle of Stone River, Tennessee. Major, March 13, 1865, for same during the war. One of founders Chicago Civ.

Service Reform League and for 2 years vice president National Reform League.
