(Excerpt from Gun and Camera in Southern Africa: A Year of...)
Excerpt from Gun and Camera in Southern Africa: A Year of Wanderings in Bechuanaland, the Desert, and the Lake River Country, Ngamiland; With Notes on Colonisation, Natives, Natural History and Sport Between 1840 and 1850, when Livingstone began first to turn his thoughts towards exploration, all the vast territories beyond the Vaal River - north, east, and west - were termed by the frontier Boers "onze veldt" (our country); and so determined were these stubborn folk to close the door of the interior to all save those of their own blood, that they fined an unfortunate explorer, named Macabe, 500 rix-dollars for daring to write to the Cape papers recommending a certain route for the discovery of Lake Ngami - then unknown to the white man. These Transvaal Boers even went the length of imprisoning Mr. Macabe until the fine was paid. Between 1840 and 1880 Britain, interested and occupied in other possessions, knew little of and cared less for South Africa. Even down to the year 1884 it seemed more than likely that the Transvaal Dutch were to be, as they had always threatened, masters of the interior. Happily at the eleventh hour a revulsion of feeling came; the British public suddenly awoke to the imminence of its prospective loss; Sir Charles Warren's expedition was sent out, and the "hinter-land" was saved.
