With San Francisco Chronicle, 1870-1879. Published a paper at Baraboo, Wisconsin, for 2 years. Removed to then Ty. of Dakota, 1882, engaging in journalism.

Was twice mayor of his city. Member 51st Congress (1889-1891). United States senator 3 terms, 1891-1909.
