Henry Davis Todd, American naval officer.

Background

Todd, Henry Davis was born on August 25, 1838 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States. Son of John N. Todd (formerly of the Navy).

Education

Educated Nyack, New York, Academy. Appointed United States Naval Academy, 1853. Graduate 1857.

Career

Promoted to passed midshipman, June 25, 1860, master, October 24, 1860. Lieutenant, April 3, 1861. Lieutenant commander, January 3, 1863.

Appointed professor mathematics, September 16, 1877. At beginning of Civil war was on Cumberland at burning of Norfolk navy yard, and afterward took part in 11 engagements, heavy batteries and sharp shooters, slightly wounded in gunboat night attack, Appomattox River, 1862. Flag Lieutenant with Admiral Wilkes, 1862-1863, and on Sacramento during rest of war.

Instructor mathematics, Naval Academy, 1865-1866, head of department physics and chemistry same, 1879-1886. On duty at Nautical Almanac Office, 1886-1900, director, 1899-1900. Retired from active service, August 25, 1900, at age limit.
