Joined army, 1886; employed in West. Africa, 1891-1897. And in India, 1897 1901. Served with Jebu Expedition as Staff Officer (despatches, medal with clasp, thanked by Government and Executive and Legislative Councils of Lagos), 1892.
Employed on various important missions to Hinterland of Gold Coast.
Aide-de-camp Ashanti Expedition (despatches, bronze star), 1895-1896. Acted as British Resident at Kumassi.
Hahsa Scholar, Christ’s College, Cambridge, 1903. Late Royal Artillery.
Resident Northern Nigeria.
