Henry Gerhard Appenzeller, American missionary.

Background

Appenzeller, Henry Gerhard was born on February 6, 1858 in Suderton, Pennsylvania, United States. Son of Gideon and Maria (Gerhard) Appenzeller.

Education

Graduate Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, 1882. Attended Drew Theological Seminary, Madison, New Jersey.

Career

Appointed missionary to Korea. Ordained to ministry, San Francisco, 1885, arrived Chemulpo, Korea, 1885, settled in Seoul, translated parts of Scripture into Korean. Co-editor Korean Repository (name changed to Korean Review), became editor.

Established Pai Chai School for Boys, 1886. Built Methodist Church, Seoul, 1895. Received injuries in scuffle with Japanese railroad workers, delayed departure for the South, 1902.

Set sail on Kumagawa which collided with the Kisawaga, 1902.

Married Ella Dodge, December 17, 1884, 3 children including Alice R. (1st white child born in Korea).
