Reed graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1825, practiced law in Philadelphia, and was assistant-professor of moral philosophy in the University of Pennsylvania in 1831-1834 and professor of English literature and rhetoric there in 1835-1854.
Admitted to Pennsylvania bar, 1829, practiced in Pennsylvania. Became assistant Professor of English literature University of Pennsylvania, 1831, also professor rhetoric, 1835-1854. Member American Philosophical Society, 1838.
1st American exponent of Wordsworth, prepared American editor Wordsworth’s Complete Works, 1837.
Published critique of Wordsworth in New York Review, 1839. Prepared Reid’s Dictionary of the English Language, 1845.
Graham’s English Synonymes (for which he supplied quotations from Shakespeare, Milton, Wordsworth), 1847. Prepared Gray’s Poetical Works.
