Railway work, principally with Norfolk & Western Railroad, engineering and operating departments, advancing to division superintendent and superintendent terminals, at Norfolk, Virginia, until 1899. Entered employ Solvay Process Company, Syracuse, New York, 1901, later president Semet-Solvay Company (and chairman By Products Coke Corporation). Director First Trust & Deposit Company, Syracuse.
Assisted in establishing the first large industry in the United States for production of aniline dyes, and in merger of General Chemical, Solvay Process, Semet-Solvay Barrett, and National Aniline and Chemical companies into the Allied Chemical and Dye Corporation.
Retired from these industries in 1921.
